Role Overview

We are seeking a Senior Engineer – Locomotives to lead our UK railway engineering operations for the Locomotives product family. This role combines strategic oversight with deep technical expertise in mechanical and electrical engineering. You will be responsible for shaping engineering strategy, ensuring compliance with safety and performance standards, and driving innovation across fleet maintenance and project delivery.

Key Responsibilities:

Strategic & Technical Leadership
• Provide support to the Engineering Director and Head of Location.
• Advise across all levels 1-4 of Entity in Charge of Maintenance.
• Develop engineering strategy, governance, and change management.
• Ensure compliance with Railway Group Standards and current legislation.
• Deputise for location senior staff as required

Operational Excellence
• Develop and implement Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) and On Condition Maintenance (OCM) programmes.
• Support BAU operations on a day-to-day basis.
• Monitor fleet performance and operational costs; drive continuous improvement and engineering optimisations.
• Oversee inspection and maintenance aligned with safety and environmental systems.
• Maintain and improve rolling stock maintenance practices.

Governance & Compliance
• Identify and mitigate engineering risks to fleet safety and reliability.
• Produce technical investigations and reports; update SRSUK on industry changes.
• Maintain comprehensive technical documentation and procedures.
• Oversee safety incident reporting and resolution.

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement
• Align engineering priorities with Heads of function, Supply Chain, and site leadership.
• Build strong relationships with manufacturing partners and customers.
• Participate in cross-functional work groups and strategic meetings.

Main Goals
• Deliver safe, punctual, reliable, and cost-effective fleet operations.
• Support performance teams with holistic technical expertise.
• Ensure staff competence and safety performance through modern practices.

Skills and Qualifications

• Chartered Engineer (IMechE or IET) or willing to work towards
• Degree or equivalent experience in a technical field (including rolling stock).
• Experience working within locomotive environment (Stadler products desirable)
• Experience in managing engineering projects and maintenance teams.
• Proven leadership in dynamic, high-pressure environments.
• Strong customer-focused mindset and commitment to quality.
• Experience managing engineering change and leading senior teams.

Desirable
• Experience with maintenance IT systems and programs.
• Financial management and budget oversight.
• Background in technical investigations and audits.
• Experience in international organisations.
• Proven risk management and documentation skills.
